Provost's Sabbatical Luncheon

Tuesday, April 8

Cindy Book, Professor of Exercise Science
Bob Hanson, Professor of Chemistry

On behalf of Jim May, Provost and Dean of the College, CILA announces the Spring 2008 "Provost's Sabbatical Series" Luncheon.

Bob Hanson's work writing a textbook in the area of thermodynamics got him interested in the works of Williard Gibbs (1839-1903).  He took the opportunity of his sabbatical to do a bit of historical research. He will describe his (first-ever) adventure in this area, which involved discovering unpublished work in the Yale University archives that has led him to a new understanding of Gibbs and of *his* understanding of thermodynamics.

Cindy Book worked on two projects during her sabbatical.   The first involved a literature review for a planned study on vertical jump.  The study itself will be conducted this summer as part of the McNair Scholarship Program (with a senior exercise science major).  The second project, her department's program review, occupied most of the leave.  She was able to write the majority of the review, with help from colleagues both within and outside of St. Olaf, and will talk a little about the personal and professional rewards of this work.
