Provost's Sabbatical Luncheon

Tuesday, February 24

Karen Cherewatuk, Professor of English
Paul Zorn, Professor of Mathematics

On behalf of Jim May, Provost and Dean of the College, CILA announces the Spring 2009 "Provost's Sabbatical Series" Luncheon.

Paul Zorn's sabbatical project was to work on a somewhat nonstandard textbook for a standard sophomore-junior mathematics course: "Elementary Real Analysis." All three of those words have special meanings in mathematics. Paul will address these definitions, and then provide some general observations about language and meaning in mathematics.

Karen Cherewatuk's sabbatical project was two-fold, to write an article on husbands and marriage in The Book of Margery Kempe, the first autobiography in English, and to co-edit a book on Death and Dying in the Arthurian World, a collection of essays on death as treated in Arthurian literature and film. Karen will address the structures she used to move forward on both projects despite personal upheaval and sabbatical's unexpected blessings.
