Provost's Sabbatical Luncheon.

Wednesday, March 22.

Andrea Een, Music; Charles Taliaferro, Philosophy.

On behalf of Jim May, Provost and Dean of the College, CILA announces the Spring 2006 "Provost's Sabbatical Series" Luncheon.

The Provost's Sabbatical Series recognizes the wide range of impressive and fascinating sabbatical projects in which our faculty are engaged. Each semester, the Provost invites two faculty members to give short presentations about their scholarly/professional work in a manner accessible to a general audience. In addition, presenters will comment on what they did to plan and prepare for their leaves, and on how they have managed the transition back to the classroom (including the ways in which they have integrated their sabbatical work with their teaching). Presenters are chosen to highlight the diversity of sabbatical projects from recent faculty leaves.

Andrea Een will discuss her continuing study of and creation of new tunes for the Hardanger fiddle repertoire, and her research on folk and classical Norwegian music. During her sabbatical, she also investigated the relationship between the Italian /bel canto/ operatic style of the 16th and 17th centuries, and the violin and viola compositions of a group of 18th and 19th century composers. Charles Taliaferro planned several new and continuing projects concerning philosophy of mind and philosophy of religion, and three different residencies in Hong Kong, Rhode Island, and at Oxford. However, he found himself appointed to take over the editorship of the philosophy of religion section of the new (2nd) edition of the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He will discuss how these various experiences and projects fit together during his sabbatical year.

If you would like to attend this special luncheon to hear Andrea's and Charles's presentations and to discuss their projects - and sabbatical leaves in general - please RSVP by return email no later than _Monday, March 20_. Space is limited for this event.
