On behalf of Jim May, Provost and Dean of the College, CILA announces the Fall 2006 "Provost's Sabbatical Series" Luncheon.
The Provost's Sabbatical Series recognizes the wide range of impressive and fascinating sabbatical projects in which our faculty are engaged. Each semester, the Provost invites two faculty members to give short presentations about their scholarly/professional work in a manner accessible to a general audience. In addition, presenters comment on what they did to plan and prepare for their leaves, and on how they have managed the transition back to the classroom (including ways in which they have integrated their sabbatical work with their teaching). Presenters are chosen to highlight the diversity of sabbatical projects from recent faculty leaves.
Eric Cole's sabbatical research took place in two very different venues, both liberally seasoned with serendipity. While exploring the link between cellular "drinking" and the process of cell division, he and his research partner, Erica Zweifel, stumbled on a new form of genetic organization. In the Caribbean, while searching for novel study sites to examine the sexual life-histories of the scaly pearl oyster, he and long-time SCUBA companion, John Campion, discovered a remarkable underwater cavern.
Anne Sabo spent her sabbatical as guest researcher at the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Oslo, where she investigated new visual representations of gender and sexuality - in particular, erotic and pornographic films by women, examining their potential to expand the categories with which we express gender and sexuality. Feminist pornography is currently a hot topic, but she had not expected the public interest her project would receive. As a result, she has begun to think about the role of the "public scholar."
If you would like to attend this special luncheon to hear Eric's and Anne's presentations and to discuss their projects - and sabbatical leaves in general - please RSVP by return email no later than _Monday, October 23, including vegetarian or other dietary requirement_.
