Magnus Good Award: A Call for Proposals

The Center for Integrative Studies and The Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts announce an award to encourage student-faculty collaborations in undergraduate research, and to stimulate and encourage the intellectual curiosity of St. Olaf students and faculty. One or more awards of up to $2000 each to support projects during the 2008-09 school year will be announced by April 1, 2008.

Background : This award, initiated in 2002-03, is made possible by the "Magnus the Good Endowed Fund," established by friends of the former Paracollege. It honors several important values of the college, including (1) that faculty and students learn well when they collaborate in one-on-one partnerships for research and/or reflection, and (2) that students learn well through real-world experiences in which they apply and extend classroom learning.

The Award : Open to projects from any discipline or combination of disciplines, this award may support either research projects or innovative applications of learning. The funds may be applied in many ways: to help with specific costs of proposed research; to provide financial support that enables a student to carry out the proposed project; to provide a modest stipend to the faculty member involved; to fund presentation of the results of research at appropriate forums. Applicants are encouraged to suggest new ways to use the grant to further student-faculty collaborations.

Although the Award usually encourges collaborations between a single faculty member and a single student, projects may involve a faculty member and up to three students.

The selection committee will favor proposals for actual collaborations over proposals that represent student work supervised by a faculty member, or faculty work in which the student participates.

Work on projects may begin in summer or fall 2008, but must be completed by May 2009.

Application : Students and faculty apply for the Magnus the Good Award as a team. Applications should include a description of the research or activity envisioned, a budget for the project specifying how the award would be used, the projected outcome of the project, and a plan for public presentation of project outcomes.

Selection : The award will be made by a committee convened by the directors of the Center for Integrative Studies and the Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts.

Application Deadline : Send notice of intent to apply to cis@stolaf.edu by March 12, 2008. Completed proposals should be sent electroncally to to carlsons@stolaf.edu by March 19, 2008.
