Proposal for an Individual Major

Attachment 3

LIBRARIAN RECOMMENDATION

Thank you for working with a student who is designing an individual, integrative major through the Center for Integrative Studies (CIS).

This student is required to consult with a reference librarian about library resources and research strategies appropriate to the proposed field of study. As the student progresses through the major, and especially when he/she approaches the senior integrative project, you should expect to be consulted again. At all times the student and you will have the support of the faculty and staff of the CIS.

After the completed proposal is submitted to the CIS, a faculty review committee will be convened to consider its approval. Included on the committee are the Director and Program Coordinator of the CIS, the student’s advisor, at least one other faculty member with expertise relevant to the proposal, and another student. Also invited are the consulting librarian, and the faculty consultant if there is one. The committee will consider criteria including but not limited to:

* whether the student proposes a clearly defined and defensible area of study

* whether the proposed major includes both appropriate foundations for study and advanced undergraduate work in the chosen field

* whether the student’s plan makes good use of the resources of the college

* whether the initial proposal for a senior project is suitable in context of the major and feasible as two units of study over the two semesters of the senior year.

Your comments will be part of the information considered by members of the faculty review committee. Please include reasons for your support of the proposal as well as concerns you may have about its implementation. If you put this form through a printer, set top/bottom margins at 6.6”/1.9”.
