The Major - Western European Architecture

[Leif Eikevik - Center for Integrative Studies - St. Olaf College]

LINKS:

This major is a comprehensive study of architecture in Western Europe; exploring how artistic and mathematical design is fundamental to Western architecture. Architecture in itself is a beautiful blend of the humanities, the sciences, and the arts. This major is intentionally conceived for a liberal arts college due to its strong liberal arts perspective.

Through the course of my major I will develop my understanding of the field by studying its building blocks across the liberal arts spectrum. I plan on studying architecture at St. Olaf from four different angles: 1) artistic design and expression; 2) the physical and mathematical constructs shaping architecture; 3) architecture as a medium for symbolic and practical design in Western culture. By studying architecture from these three angles within my education at St. Olaf, I hope to gain a thorough insight into Western architecture as a form of artistic, logical, and practical expression through the eyes of Western culture and the world.

This knowledge and research is then implemented in my own design work, through drawing and architectural drafting in the studio.
