One hand to head
pensive, thoughtful
Hand scratches head
puzzled, thinking
Hands on cheeks, turn
no, unbelievable
Hands, arms crisscross, recross
embarrassment, nervousness
Elbow in hand, chin in other hand
pondering
Movement for Torso
Meaning
Bow forward
welcome, searching on the ground
Bend backward
looking up, surprise

(Add to the list. Try to stump the puppet with an action; then find a solution.)

Movement for “Legs”

Turning the puppet body slightly to the right and then to the left as it moves forward simulates walking on legs. Variations on this basic “walk” will help you to develop unique character walks.

Slow, hesitant steps. Is the puppet shy, timid, aged, blind, pregnant?

Short, bouncy steps. Is the puppet youthful, perky, athletic, silly?

Swooping steps. Is the puppet haughty, regal, or absent-minded?

Body hunched over, steps heavily accented on one sideà Is the puppet old, lame, tired?

Simulate other ways of moving/walking with your puppet:

Bounce   Crawl      Fall/Faint  Glide   Leap    Lope    Run     Shuffle   Soar   Stomp

Cavort   Dawdle   Flounce    Jump   Limp   March  Scramble   Skip    Stagger  Tiptoe

(Experiment until you’ve built a repertoire of “walks” that suit your puppet.)
