The Effect of Classes
Class work created the structure and the institution through which my thoughts were spun. It is difficult to trace the evolution of an idea from its constituent notions to its finalized form, especially considering the diverse offerings in a liberal arts education. Yet the lineage is there, existing mostly in the connections between classes rather than in the coursework itself. The idea of discourse analysis is a product of this lineage. No single class discusses discourse analysis, yet its bases are present, explicit or not, in classes throughout the academic disciplines.
Depicting the lineage of classes that precede discourse analysis can be quite difficult. It requires a web-like representation rather than a linear-text description. In the following Classweb Illustration, the courses I have taken are arranged to represent a lineage of my academic ideas. Both the classes and the connections between classes contain information about how they shaped my experience at St. Olaf College.
