Independent Major Proposal

Every major from the Center for Integrative Studies must create a major proposal and present it to a faculty review committee. The proposal must include a description of the major, a rationale for why it must be independently conducted, a list of the courses required for the major, and a preliminary outline of a senior project. Much of the major can change, even after it has been finalized, but the proposal remains as the guiding document for the major.

My proposal outlined five aspect that are central to my major: (1) the development of ethical theories on the environment; (2) the economic forces that have created the market landscape upon which many environmental problems are both created and solved; (3) the political reality and underlying political theory that has affected governmental response to environmental demands; (4) the response of citizens, both organized and unorganized, to environmental problems and environmental solutions; (5) and finally, the technical and scientific knowledge necessary to understand specific environmental debates that have developed in recent times.
