The Tangible Results of the Major

The Senior Project serves as the capstone for Independent Majors in the Center for Integrative Studies. For my major, I conducted a discourse analysis of the environmental reporting in the Manitou Messenger, a student newspaper at St. Olaf College.

Environmentalism is a large word. It is a broad enough to describe market-based conservation and idealistic deep ecology; it is sizeable enough to justify almost every common viewpoint on environmental protection. However, the array of solutions offered under environmentalism is expansive, ranging from minor adjustments of policy to radical restructuring of society. The discourses at play in society determine which solutions are supported; therefore, analyzing the language in our environmental reporting is of vital importance.

This study is a primarily a descriptive discourse analysis of the Manitou Messenger; however, heavy emphasis is placed on discourse theory and epistemology, as well as discourse forms and typology. In so doing, many of the postmodern implications of discourse analysis are investigated.
