welcome.
This web portfolio is the culmination of the senior project, a requirement for completing an individual major at St. Olaf college. The project began four years ago, with an acknowledgment that my interests could not be encompassed with established majors at St. Olaf. However, it was not until April 2006 that my proposal was formally accepted.
A brief word about the above graphic: The shape is indicative of Venn diagrams we used as children as a comparative tool. Modern medicine - proponent of technology, science, and biological models - historically downplayed cultural impact on health. Culture was considered distinct from health. Increasingly globalization and focus on cultural understanding blends these spheres. The overlap between medicine and culture is substantial. In my study, I strive to elucidate this intersection.
Health is not built on scientific foundations alone. Health is not the result of cultural foundations alone. Rather, health is very much the intersection of these foundations. Health care is global.
