Groomis Grants
2009 Groomis Grant
The winner of the 4th annual Groomis Grant Competition was announced on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society. Groomis Grants ($500 each) are intended to defray the cost of Classics-related summer projects undertaken by St. Olaf students.
This year's winner is first-year student Elizabeth S. Creager, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who is considering a Latin Education major. The grant will enable her to attend the 62nd Annual Institute of the American Classical League, taking place at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, June 26-28, 2009. She hopes that spending three days listening to presentations and interacting with Latin teachers from around the country will help her discern whether a career in K-12 Latin Education is right for her.
Groomis Grants are funded from the earnings of the Groton and Loomis Endowments. The former was established by Anne H. Groton, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf. The latter was established by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen Loomis, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and Mathematics.
