Groomis Awards for Summer Projects
2011 Groomis Award Winners
Winners of the 6th annual Groomis Award competition were announced on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society. Groomis Awards are awarded to St. Olaf students who are undertaking worthy Classics-related summer projects.
This year's winners are Katherine A. Crawford, a senior from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Kristofer D. Coffman, a sophomore from Glendale, California. Katherine, a triple major in Latin, Medieval Studies, and English, will be participating in an excavation in Stobi, Macedonia, August 3-17, 2011, sponsored by the Balkan Heritage Field School. Kris, a major in Religion, will be doing independent study of Biblical Hebrew in preparation for seminary. The Groomis Awards will help with the program expenses for Katherine and with the cost of textbooks for Kris.
This is Katherine's second Groomis Award. In 2010 she received one to support her participation in the Ostia Marina Summer Archaeology Field School. This year her paper on "The Foundation of the Roman Imperial Cult" was selected for presentation at the Sunoikisis Research Symposium held April 29-30 at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. She has also won an award from the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies. Next fall she will begin graduate school in Classical Archaeology at the University of British Columbia.
Groomis Awards are funded from the Groton and Loomis Endowments. The former was established by Anne H. Groton, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf. The latter was established by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen Loomis, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and Mathematics.
