Groomis Grants

2008 Groomis Grants

The winner of the 3rd annual Groomis Grant Competition was announced on Monday, May 12, 2008, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society.  Groomis Grants ($500 each) are intended to defray the cost of Classics-related summer projects undertaken by St. Olaf students.

This year's winner is sophomore Adrienne C. Rowell, a History major from Santa Cruz, CA.  During the summer she will participate in a three-week dig sponsored by the Ecomuseum of the Cape of Cavelleria in Menorca, Spain.  For five days per week she will work on the excavation of the ancient Roman town of Saninsera and will hear lectures on archaeology and methodology; on weekends she will visit other sites and museums.  In the fall she plans to study abroad with St. Olaf's Term in Asia.  Adrienne hopes that her field experience this summer will help her decide whether or not to pursue a career in archaeology.

Groomis Grants are funded from the earnings of the Groton and Loomis Endowments. The former was established by Anne Groton, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf.  The latter was established by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen Loomis, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and Mathematics.
