Results of the 2009 Groton Greek Contest

On Monday, May 4, 2009, the St. Olaf College Department of Classics held its 8th annual competition for the Groton Endowed Academic Award in Greek. Names of the winners were announced on Saturday, May 9, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society.

First prize ($300) went to Hilary J. Bouxsein, a senior Classics/Philosophy major from Evanston, Illinois.  She earned second place in this contest in 2008 and tied for third in 2007.  This year she also received two prizes (2nd in Koine Greek, 2nd in Advanced Classical Greek) in the Maurine Dallas Watkins Translation Contests and an Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies from the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS).  Currently the president of Delta Chi, she was the Classics Department's Greek tutor in 2007-08.  She acted in two St. Olaf Latin plays, Plautus' Menaechmi in 2007 and Plautus' Mostellaria in 2008.  Elected to Phi Beta Kappa this spring, she will begin the Ph.D. program in Classics at the University of Virginia in the fall.

Second prize ($200) went to Peter T. Moench, a senior Classics/English major from Eagan, Minnesota.  Elected to Phi Beta Kappa last fall, he has served as the Classics Department's Greek tutor this year.  He acted in Plautus' Menaechmi in 2007.

Third prize ($100) went to David T. Estle, a junior Classics major from Tybee Island, Georgia.  Currently the secretary of Delta Chi, he acted in Plautus' Menaechmi in 2007 and Plautus' Mostellaria in 2008.

This year the sight translation passage for the Greek contest was an elegy by the Spartan poet Tyrtaeus (7th century B.C.). The exam had a 1-hour time limit.

The Academic Award in Greek was endowed by Anne Groton, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf.
