Loomis Endowed Academic Award in Latin

Results of the 2008 Loomis Latin Contest

On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, the St. Olaf College Department of Classics held its 8th annual competition for the Loomis Endowed Academic Award in Latin. Names of the winners were announced on Monday, May 12, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society.

First prize ($300) went to Thomas K. Halvorsen, a sophomore Classics major from Edina, MN.  Last year Halvorsen tied for third place in this same contest.   He has received three prizes (last year 2nd in Latin Prose Composition, this year 1st in Latin Prose Composition and 1st in Advanced Latin) in the national Maurine Dallas Watkins Translation Contests.

Second prize ($200) went to Sarah M. Adamson, a junior Classics/Chemistry double major from Rochester, MN.  She performed in this year's Latin play, Plautus' Mostellaria.

Third prize ($100) went to Hilary J. Bouxsein, a junior Classics/Philosophy double major with a Linguistic Studies concentration, from Evanston, IL.  She tied for third place in this contest in 2007.  This year she served as the departmental Greek tutor; she has also performed in two Latin plays (2007, 2008).

Honorable mention went to Alaina K. Burkard, a senior Classics/Biology double major from Portland, OR.  She also received Honorable Mention in Intermediate Latin in the Watkins Translation Contests in 2005.  This year she served as hyparchos (vice-president) of Delta Chi chapter; she has participated in three Latin plays (2005, 2007, 2008).

This year the students who entered the Loomis Latin contest had to translate at sight one of Pliny's letters.  The exam had a 1-hour time limit.

The Academic Award in Latin was endowed by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen Loomis, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and Mathematics.
