On Monday, May 9, 2011, the St. Olaf College Department of Classics held its 11th annual competition for the Loomis Endowed Academic Award in Latin. Names of the winners were announced on Saturday, May 14, at the spring picnic of Delta Chi, St. Olaf's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national Classics honor society.
In the Loomis Latin Contest first prize ($300) went to Emily Marie Sandquist, a sophomore Classics majors from Singapore. She won 3rd prize in this competition last year. She also received 1st prize in Intermediate Latin (last year) and 3rd prize in Advanced Latin (this year) in the national Maureen Dallas Watkins Contests. In this year's St. Olaf Latin play she had the role of a ballerina. Currently the clerk for the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS), headquartered at St. Olaf, she will serve as the departmental Latin tutor next year.
Second prize ($200) went to Martin P. Shedd, a senior from Ashburnham, Massachusetts, majoring in Classics and Music. He won 3rd prize in the Loomis Latin Contest in 2009. In 2008 he won 2nd prize in Intermediate Latin in the Maureen Dallas Watkins Contests. Last year he served as the vice-president of Delta Chi, and in 2008 he attended the national convention of Eta Sigma Phi in Amherst, Massachusetts. He has acted and sung in two St. Olaf Latin plays (2008 and 2011). This year he received an award from CAMWS for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies. Recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa, he will begin graduate school in Classics at Indiana University Bloomington this fall.
Third prize ($100) went to Adam D. Berndt, a sophomore Classics major from Fargo, North Dakota. He has acted in the last two St. Olaf Latin plays (2009 and 2011). Next year he will serve as the back-up departmental Latin and Greek tutor.
This year the students who entered the Loomis Latin contest had to translate at sight a passage from Augustine's De civitate Dei 15.27. The exam had a 1-hour time limit.
The Academic Award in Latin was endowed by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen Loomis, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and Mathematics.
