Results of the 2006-07 Competition

Results of the 2006-07 Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests were announced at the national convention of Eta Sigma Phi (the Classics honor society for college and university students), held at Temple University in Philadelphia, March 30-April 1, 2007. Among this year's winners are three students majoring in Classics at St. Olaf College.

Elizabeth A. Beerman, a senior Classics major from Clive, IA, has won 1st prize in the Advanced Latin Translation Contest. As a sophomore, she won 2nd prize in the Intermediate Koine Greek Translation Contest.

Jennifer S. Starkey, a senior Classics major from Laramie,WY, has won 2nd prize in the Advanced Greek Translation Contest and 3rd prize in the Advanced Latin Translation Contest. As a sophomore she won 2nd prize, and as a junior 1st prize, in Advanced Latin.

Thomas K. Halvorsen, a first-year Classics major from Edina, MN, has won 2nd prize in the Latin Prose Composition Contest.

St. Olaf was the only school to win four prizes this year. The other fifteen prizes went to students from Xavier University (3 prizes), from Hillsdale College, Brigham Young University, the University of California-Davis, and the University of Texas (2 prizes each), and from Trinity University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Florida, and the University of the South (1 prize each). In addition, 10 people received honorable mention; these included students from Baylor University, the College of the Holy Cross, Louisiana State University, the University of Dallas, and the University of Rochester.

There were 73 entries in the Advanced Latin Translation Contest, 47 in the Advanced Greek Translation Contest, and 28 in the Latin Prose Composition Contest.

Students must be enrolled in an ancient Greek or Latin course at the intermediate or advanced level to be eligible to compete in one or more of these categories: Classical Greek (Intermediate or Advanced Level), Koine Greek (Intermediate Level), Latin (Intermediate or Advanced Level), Latin Prose Composition (Advanced Level). After students take the written exams at St. Olaf in February, their papers are mailed to a national distribution center and sent out from there to be evaluated anonymously by judges at universities elsewhere in the country. The winners receive monetary awards as well as national recognition.

In the Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests, St. Olaf College has the best record of any school in the country, with at least one winner every year since 1980.
