Stories of Summer 2005

How have you been spending your summer 2005 vacation? Here are quick stories of a few St. Olaf CS folks (contact Dick Brown if you'd like to add yours).

  • Bryan Anderson '06 and Joel Johnson '06 worked as full-time undergraduate researchers on the CPET project for Dick Brown from June 1 to August 5. CPET consists of a browser plugin and a remote server designed for extensibility, intended to add special-purpose capabilities to a browser session. We made progress on beefing up the security of the system, on adding a new "automatic annotation" feature, and on packaging the system for the Firefox browser.

  • Professors Dick Brown and Olaf Hall-Holt have been working on developing a new theme of web-based multimedia communication to CS 121 (CS1), as described elsewhere on the CS web site.

In addition, Olaf travelled in China for over a week with a manufacturing group from Stanford---not that he didn't find time to think about CS1 while he was there!

  • At this writing (Aug. 11), Elizabeth Jensen '07 and Jeremy Gustafson '08 are in Chennai, India with four Biology students, pioneering a new off-campus program, directed by Professors Matt Richey (MSCS) and Anne Walter. Matt reports: "The CS project, in particular, is going quite well. We're creating an 'online' course in IT which has an emphasis on web-related skills [for Indian students]. The content will come from existing online resources (e.g. tutorials). The students here at ICSA are wonderful." The picture below shows Jeremy in the back row (4th from left) and Elizabeth in the front row (center, blue top), with Matt and Anne to the right of her.
