Thursday 9/30, 1pm, Viking Theater: An Iowa Farmboy In Silicon Valley: Computer Lessons Learned From Academics And Industry

Meet a Google engineer! For our first CS speaker of the year, we are fortunate that Craig Cornelius, a Google engineer on the Internationalization team, will be visiting St. Olaf on Thursday and Friday of this week! The first opportunity you'll have to hear Craig is during the MSCS colloquium. This will be a general talk for anyone in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science.
    SPEAKER: Craig Cornelius, Google Corp.
TITLE: An Iowa Farmboy In Silicon Valley: Computer Lessons Learned From Academics And Industry

Abstract:

Biographical information:

The rate of change of technology has been truly astounding in recent years. Among many consequences, computing and communications now connect people all over the world. How can we manage it all? This question applies to international corporations such as Google as much as it does to us as individuals. Craig Cornelius will speak about his experiences from undergraduate to graduate school, teaching to academic research, medical computing to Googling. These are some of things he wishes he'd known when he was learning how to compute.

Thursday, 9/30, 3:45pm, RNS 210: Programming For The World: I18N And The Software You'll Be Building
Craig Cornelius, Google Corp.

The second talk Craig Cornelius of Google will give is on Craig's specialty at Google, internationalization, which means making Google products accessible in multiple languages all over the world. This talk is intended for people who are taking (or have taken) one or more CS courses.
    SPEAKER: Craig Cornelius, Google Corp
TITLE: Programming For The World: I18N And The Software You'll Be Building
    TIME: Thursday, 9/30, 3:45pm
    PLACE: RNS 210
    Refreshments 3:30

Abstract:

There's a whole world out there, and you want to reach them. But they don't all read English. This talk will discuss the need for internationalization (I18N) and localization (L10N) in building software systems and applications. We'll cover good techniques to make software ready for any country and language, discussing writing systems and how Unicode simplifies text in any language. Illustrated with "gotchas" and exceptions to common assumptions, the talk will make you think more broadly about engineering computer programs for the real world and all its people. "

Thursday, 9/30, 5:45pm, Buntrock 142: Jobs And Interships At Google
Craig Cornelius, Google Corp.

Ever wondered what it would be like to work for Google, or how to land such a position? Come and find out! Craig Cornelius's third event of the day will be a recruiting talk for anyone who is curious about working for Google. Since Google doesn't make a practice of interviewing at schools of our size, this is probably a unique opportunity.

This event is sponsored by http://www.stolaf.edu/services/cel/, which is St. Olaf's go-to place for information about getting jobs, finding internships, and entrepreneurship activities. If you aren't familiar with CEL, get to know them. They can help you find opportunities, put together a resume or cover letter, give you practice interviews -- the works! The sooner you get to know these friendly and helpful folks, the more they can help you.
