1) Initial Goal, Rationale, Physical Feat & Additional Information
You are expected to identify and give a rationale for two initial goals
you have in taking this course, and share something about yourself
with this class.
Modern Dance I (two sections: dance-111a & b)
Fall 2011
With music called modern to burn,
I think of the freedom I'll learn
For I long to leap higher,
With poise like a fire,
That the poetic inside me might yearn.
My body's control I desire,
To be a teacher worth hire.
In front of the class
Conducting a mass,
My arms moving with fire.
My goal is to learn about movement in space
Expression of thoughts that I bring to this place
My love is photography
Yet I hope soon to see
Image in movements my body will trace
Through dance, my body I wish to control.
If need be, on the floor I will roll,
To gain the skill,
To bend at will,
And master my body in whole.
This summer I biked across the nation,
And perhaps found an occupation,
As an activist,
Throwing up my fist,
For our planet's salvation.
I do not have much flexibility,
Or know-how dance mobility,
This will change,
When I expand my range,
And find confident versatility.
My experience in dance is none at all
But that is why I’m here this fall
My goal for dance is to learn to flow
And hopefully it will be quite a show
I hope to have some fun this year!
I've always wanted to learn how to dance,
But when little, never gave it a glance.
To keep good posture is key,
which is what I lack in ability.
Music is started, so now I get my chance.
She comes for New York, this girl.
See those really bright colors and curl.
She loves grilled corn
and plays the French Horn.
When it comes to dancing time, she just gives it a whirl.
Though I’ve never been partial to dance,
I figured I should give it a chance.
I’ll remain ever humble
when I trip and I stumble
despite having practiced the prance.
I’ve never had time to dance
Though if given, I would like the chance
To fulfill my yearning
By dancing and learning
And in this way, my confidence advance
Ballet I have studied since the young age of five
But in this new form of dance I do hope to survive
To learn to let go
And let the moves flow
Inhibitions forgotten, I desire to strive
I want to improve my flexibility,
and enhance my dance abilities.
An actress though I may be,
I need to learn to be free,
and loose my dancing inhibitions.
Improving my creativity is needed I've heard.
My flexibility is so poor it's absurd.
And although I may be
Obsessed with HP,
I'm really a cool kind of nerd.
This drummer's found often too tense
And longs for laxed movement's commence.
Plus: some music's old
And this drummer's sold
On feeling art with a dancer's sense.
Dance has always been part of me
But modern requires fold-ability
As we let our necks drop
To the drum’s sweet knock,
I focus and drift simultaneously.
I was dropped off in the juggle
He who run away from struggle to survival
Proud athlete, so versatile, tiny yet strong
Never danced before, the felling’s exciting
Allow me to express, rejoice, and be happy with y'al
I’d like to not be such a chicken-
To dance freely without turning crimson.
Though my body moves now,
I’d sure like to know how!
I like musicals – ‘specially Pippin.
I have studied several types of dance
But I would like to give Modern a chance.
In chemistry I major.
In the scene shop I labor.
Improvisation I want to enhance.
With yoga, modern goes well, I think
Flexibility and sheer fun to the brink
To bend and express
Will sure be the best
As I move to that rhythmic beat.
To develop my skills for the stage
To dance and to write on the page
All the knowledge I see
To prep me for Glee
Which I’ll watch as I eat in the Cage
Way back home 22 hours away
Bollywood and bhangra's the way we sway
Now it's time for a change
and dance in a language that's slightly strange
but confidence then builds through this way, won't you say?
To develop a better stage presence
Seems to me something of essence
Or to connect in kind
My body and mind
Something lacking in tetchy lab science!
My body is always lookin' to groove,
This is why I must let it move.
I've got steps that I've never seen,
So hopefully I won't damage my spleen.
I'm ready to move and groove as long as you approve.
There once was a student named Kevin
whose body he wished to leaven
He enrolled in a class
that may kick his ass
At least he'll be flexible in Heaven.
There once was a girl named Lauren
Who happened to transfer from Boston.
She loved to dance and design graphically,
But an area that was lacking was her flexibility.
She is hoping modern dance will become her comfort zone.
I want to be able to move
And be comfortable starting a groove
I too need some fun
This gets the job done
And of dancing I may soon approve!
One day I know I will shine
People will gather, to get in line
To see a performance like no other
I’d be that amazing African girl; you wont have to look no further
With outstanding dancing skills
And a voice that brings chills
One day I know I will shine
And “Cindy” will be up on every sign
There once was a girl named Johnna,
She couldn’t rhyme to save her llama.
She tried nightly and daily,
‘till her hair had turned grey-ly,
So she decided to write a haiku-a.
~
Ballet, jazz and tap,
I’ve studied the three supreme.
Modern: time to learn.
~
Words: written, spoken
Enliven the soul to dream
And fill me to full.
~
Quick! study, meetings…
I must use that funny thing,
Express through Body.
Back in Montana all we know
Is how to hokey poke and do-si-do
This year I decided to take a chance
And try to learn how to truly dance
I'd love to learn some balance and grace
And how to utilize the dance space
I hope through dance I can learn more about my body
Even if the dance I perform is a wee bit shoddy
There once was a girl from Nepal
with no formal dance training at all.
So she took a chance
for her grace to enhance
now she just hopes she won't fall!
Grace wants to master improvisation
but not do it at the gas station
the fluidity is key
she likes to play yahtzee
and loves to go on vacation!
To increase appendage awareness;
Expression through dancing, un-careless.
I'm good at untruths,
I'm not often uncouth,
And I value respect, trust and fairness. |
Modern Dance II (dance-210/211 a)
Fall 2011
Sporty girl I've always been
Swimming, cross country, always trying to win
Starting ballet at age fourteen
Addicted to pushing harder in hopes to glean
A moment of bliss that doesn't involve sin
My goals for this class may sound mere,
But I pledge that they are sincere.
I aim to show no restraint
And technique I must acquaint,
Then mold it all to cohere.
I come from a background of 15 years of dance
And through them I've always strived to advance.
I want to lose my inhibitions
While upholding my ballet traditions
And continue to explore the world of modern dance.
My goals in this course are small:
work hard and break down my wall
and try to devise
a way to improvise
that tells a story overall.
I dance=I shake out that spirit!
Heads turn, now everyone hears it!
Both sides of my brain
Invested to gain
some grace, while I redefine "limit"!
Not needing the music as much to groove
Knowing when and how to move
These goals to push me past par
While I wish to travel far
This and more I want to improve.
Dance is a creative outlet
I owe it a very large debt
I'm paying my dues
I'm taking its cues
Finding intentions unmet.
I am Elly, I love to dance
I wish to move gigantic
I wish I lived in France
I’d fly over Atlantic
Do you think I have a chance?
With passion and with love, dance is a language of myself.
Release my emotion, express my heart;
Dance shows my other side.
Gave me brave and gave me strength;
Dance can help me keep my spirit and keep me feel alive.
There once was a girl from Missouri
Who was always in such a hurry
She lacked precision
For she was uncertain
But she always enjoyed hot curry. |
2) Name Phrase Creative Activity

relationship to the group (simultaneously, staggered in time
(canon/round), cause and effect, etc.)?
- Are there moments of:
- interaction (spatial, movement without contact, movement with contact)

3) Modern Dance History Video Forum - Through Spring 2012
- You are expected to select and view one historical video on
modern dance this term to gain insight on some of the modern dance
artists who were catalysts for its development and evolution.
- After viewing the video, you will make an initial posting by the
specified due date/time in response to questions posed by the
instructor.
- You will then read all posts by your classmates and respond to at

- Modern Dance History & Artists Resources
Pre-Video Viewing Questions to Consider
- At this point in your life and as you begin or continue your
training in modern dance via this course, what information introduced
in the video was interesting or meaningful to you and why?
- Describe a situation in which you were called upon or compelled
to be a 'pioneer' (an originator who helps open up a new line of
thought or activity or a new method, etc.).
- Artists have been known to be "ahead of their time", suffering
the fate of being unappreciated during their lifetime, while achieving
high regard postmortem. Take a few minutes to ponder an artist of any
age that you like and believe is or was under appreciated. Name the
artist and tell us why you like her/him.
Video Viewing
- There will be one class period dedicated to viewing a modern dance
history video this term. The exact date will be announced later.

6) Observation Paper
If you are not able to participate during a class period due to illness
or injury, you may avoid being counted absent for the day by observing
the class and submitting an observation paper. This option may be used
once, as two observations equal one absence. Below are guidelines to
be followed in completing an observation paper.
- Bring pen/paper/laptop with you to the class you plan to observe.
You should take detailed notes on the process/progress of the students
in class, taking into consideration dance technique, performance and
other aspects from class that we are working on and you deem relevant.
- You should reflect upon your individual class process and submit a
one-page paper comparing/contrasting your process with that of the
other students in class.
- The observation paper must be submitted as an online assignment
via Moodle prior to the beginning of the next class period to avoid
receiving an absence for the observed class.
- Please carefully follow the Written Assignment Submission Guidelines in the course syllabus.
Modern Dance II ONLY
1) Dance-210 Independent Dance Technique Project Assignment (for students registered for .50 credit)
You are expected to design and engage in a research activity in
consultation with me. The specific objective of the research activity is
to deepen and broaden your individual process, inquiry and exploration
of dance technique in the context of this course.
Research examples might involve:
- the theoretical and experiential research of another form of
dance, including but not limited to: tango, jazz, hip-hop, Irish Step
dancing, Bharatanatyam [form of classical Indian Dance], contact
improvisation, etc.
- compare/contrast different styles of modern dance technique,
including but not limited to: Graham, Humphrey, Limón, Hawkins, Horton,
Cunningham, Nikolais, classical/release technique, etc.
- The examination of a dance artist who has made a significant contribution to dance.
The research you pursue will result in:
- an in class oral presentation incorporating audio/visual media* in
the form of video excerpts that exemplify and/or highlight relevant
aspects of your research.
- a movement exploration or mini-class in which other members of the class participate
- an outline of your presentation with annotated bibliography.
For your project to be successful, it must examine and synthesize
historical, social, cultural, political, as well as artistic influences,
again within the context of this course. You are required to schedule 2
separate meetings with me during the term to discuss the process and
progress of your dance technique project.
*The audio/visual media may include vhs/dvd videos played via the
studio audio/video equipment, the department portable media cart (if
available) or your personal computer. You may also consider using a
PowerPoint presentation to organize your thoughts and material. If you
plan to use your personal computer, you must check out a projector and
all necessary cables from IIT (plan and practice with the technology in
advance, so that you have enough time to consult with IIT (helpdesk)
and make necessary adjustments if you need assistance with the
technology.
Preliminary Discussion Preparation:
- Near the beginning of the term, you will select a movement
intensive dance topic that interests you, and you will engage in
preliminary research on that topic.
- You will submit via this Google doc your dance discussion topic
along with a rationale for selecting this topic, and a preliminary
annotated bibliography (MLA style) of three evaluated sources. You may be asked to revise your topic.
- You will then begin to conduct more extensive, in depth research
of the dance topic and compile a more extensive corresponding annotated
bibliography (MLA style). You should indicate the category that each of your resources
falls under and why (what makes this resource ‘primary’, for example).
- You must consult with a reference librarian at Rolvaag Memorial
Library and Beth Christensen at Halvorson Music Library to assist you
in locating, retrieving and utilizing the most appropriate, effective
sources for your discussion. The research sources for your discussion
should include:
- New Resource: You must work with the St. Olaf Speaking Center: See Google Doc at: https://docs.google.com/a/stolaf.edu/document/d/1mgtGMp4WbPbqWfFKYMMEPXBjkHXLVvfe5W4I5VqQCEE/edit
Within one week of your Presentation Day:
- You will test your presentation using the technology cart
stored in the faculty prep studio. You will need to arrange with me or
another dance faculty to gain access to the technology cart, so plan
ahead to make sure your test run is successful.
Day of Presentation:
- You will introduce the topic of your discussion by briefly
providing background information on your dance discussion topic.
Preparing responses to the following questions will assist you in your
preparation:
- Why is this topic of interest and/or relevant to you as a student dancer?
- What is the historical timeline and significance of this
topic, and what is the current standing and/or relevance of this topic
to the dance field?
- Who are some of the leading figures, and what are some of the
dominant factors in shaping the path and relevance of the dance topic?
- You will submit a hard copy of your presentation outline and your annotated bibliography to the instructor.
- You will also submit via Moodle an electronic copy of your
presentation outline, your annotated bibliography, and PowerPoint
presentation (if applicable) if file size permits (50 MB, I believe).
Look for the Independent Dance Technique Project Assignment Files
Submission module on Moodle.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Preparation: Was your presentation topic and bibliography
submitted and on time? Did you appear to be adequately prepared to lead
the presentation?
- Research: Did you utilize the library staff in the pursuit of
your resources. Did you utilize the appropriate category and number of
resources?
- Content: Did you provide contextual information as an
introduction of your dance topic? Was the relevant information on your
topic given during your discussion?
- Delivery: Did you clearly deliver and moderate your discussion?
How were the speed, volume, and confidence during the oral
presentation of your discussion?
- Fostering discussion: Did your presentation generate interest, questions and discussion amongst the class?
- Outline and Bibliography: Was the outline coherent and relevant
to the discussion, and was the bibliography complete and relevant to
the discussion. Were both the outline and bibliography appropriately
submitted?
You may submit/upload several files, one at a time, via this
assignment module. After uploading all files, you will click on "Send
for marking", and then you will be directed to another page that will
ask: "Once the assignment is sent for marking, you will no longer be
able to delete or attach file(s). Do you want to continue?" Click,
"yes."
