Off Campus Programs
Over 700 St. Olaf students study off campus each year, among them many English majors. Students fulfill requirements for the English major by attending plays during the Theatre in London Interim, by doing independent research among the manuscripts at the Newberry Library in Chicago, by studying at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Oxford University. Opportunities for off-campus study include the English department’s own Interim programs, other St. Olaf-sponsored programs, and an array of programs offered by other institutions, in which St. Olaf students regularly participate.
Recent English department off-campus Interim courses have included “The Moral Vision: Fiction, Faith, Love” at Holden Village, a retreat center in the Cascade Mountains of the state of Washington; “Performing Arts in New York”; “Irish Short Stories”; “Literature of the Eastern Caribbean”; and “Hemingway in Cuba.” Many St. Olaf English majors study for a semester or a year at a university in Great Britain or Ireland. Other majors participate in St. Olaf’s Term in Asia and Global Semester; study a foreign language in countries including Spain, France, Norway, and Russia; or practice teaching in such places as India and Korea.
