The English Major
All English majors complete three core courses. In English 185 students study contemporary global literature to learn the methods of literary study, and to develop reading, writing, and oral communication skills. They then turn to an historical survey of literature in English 221 and 222, tracing literary movements from roots in Anglo Saxon to the mid-nineteenth century.
Building on this foundation, majors take one course designated "Global Literatures in English, 1850-present (GLE)." Courses in this category emphasize the multicultural, transnational, and post-colonial nature of much literature written in English.
These four courses give majors a common experience; enhance their skills in reading, writing, and interpreting literature; and orient them to the transnational concept of literatures in English. The remaining five courses are electives. English majors can design their major to match their interests and objectives, whether these be teaching, writing, graduate school, or "other." Many English majors add a second major or concentration.
