Kate Huber, Sophomore, Northfield Senior High School
Interview - May 16, 2003.
The City
- Ms. Huber's favorite aspects of Northfield include: the lively atmosphere
created by the colleges, the downtown, the Carleton arboretum, the St. Olaf
natural lands, and the farmland surrounding the city.
- Ms. Huber likes the city, but not "some of the ways it's growing."
She singles out the development down Highway 3 and the conversion of farmland
into residential areas.
- After a time away for college and other activities, says Ms. Huber,
"the idea of coming back to Northfield isn't a bad one."
Community Activism
- Ms. Huber is a member of Youth Plus, a discussion and service oriented
organization fostering connections between community youth and leaders.
- Ms. Huber sees the organization as a response to a major challenge
faced by the community: "It seems like its hard, being a kid, to get involved"
in community issues.
Environmental Consciousness
- Environmental concerns are "very important" to "a small group" of
students. These students "live a lifestyle that goes along with that." On
the other hand, "many don't care" about environmental issues.
- Ms. Huber believes that "there needs to be something done to educate
people" on environmental issues.
- Says Ms. Huber, "I would like to see Northfield as a community do
more simple things like solar and wind power, and to educate people on it."
- "The benefits of wind power are so obvious to me," says Ms. Huber.
