segue installation Art 340, Topics in Studio Art Fall 2002 "SEGUE" ARTIST STATEMENT
Professor Jim Farrell has always said that our lives are ruled by dead people. What he means is that all our actions, relationships, and knowledge are provided to us through the legacy of those now past. My topics work, inspired by the tragic deaths this semester of Paul Wellstone and a close friend, have challenged me to deal with grief, to find answers, and hopefully to heal. How do the individuals that inspire me become part of what I embody? How do I allow their teachings to live through me after they have left? The ultimate segue, that from the reality of life to death is what I have chosen to explore. -The veil of this reality which only allows one to catch a glimpse of the other side once or twice during life. -The vessel that carries our consciousness out into the darkness, or light. Is a casket where it ends? Are we simply the swiftly fading memory? Or the legacy? Or the martyr? These are the vague embodiments of what I can only attempt to understand |

"casket" red oak, nylon, steel, digital prints, leather, lighting This end of the piece has the words "coldsnap" inscribed on the photo. To me this piece was about the natural course of life that can sometime drastically change. To me these drastic changed are still very much natural, but hard to explain, and ultimately frustrating to our species. I used this concept as a way to tackle the death of my friend. |

"veil" oil on canvas, nylon, red oak lighting. This piece was an exploration of the memories that remain after a person or symbol has left us. The veil that separates us from them is can be seen through and a dialogue can still resonate as we allow their memory to live through us. |

Oil Painting Artist Statement on Revolution
Series
An observation. A critique. A quiet request. A scream in the dark. An observation- In our own way we are all uneasy, uncomfortable, confused. A critique- All tied together in our unrest we seem to lurch through life with dazed eyes, angry movements, clouded perception. A quiet request- Open your eyes, your consciousness. A scream in the dark- SEE! My work is indirectly about the emotions created within myself concerning both the negative impact humans have had upon the natural ecology of the planet and also with the injustices that have been waged upon the exploited and oppressed. The more direct message deals with the progression of our awareness from confusion, unrest, and disorganization(shown in the first piece) to organization, enlightenment, and evolution of consciousness(shown in the second piece). The final piece showing the evolution of consciousness realized portrays enlightened humans understanding the complex web of problems that creates the unease within our world. This will be the ultimate revolution. The work is an observation of what I see and what I hope for the future |
