This book gives a general overview of the different ethnic groups that
have been attracted to settle in Minnesota and some of the reasons they
settled in the state. It also talks about what
Minnesota
was like when they did settle here. It is a sort
of history through people and their ethnicity, which may have
influenced
where they settled and on what type of land. This
may or may not have been an element in the settlement of the Northfield
area.

This book talks more locally about how settlement took place in Rice
County and the early Cannon River Valley area in which Northfield is
located. It
goes back before settlement showing some of the factors leading up to
it,
which are also important in understanding the settlement itself.

This book also talks about the settlement of the County but is in a
storybook form intended for children to learn about their
locality.
It
has interesting portrayals of the settlement and the relation that the
first white settlers had with Native Americans in the area. It
am not sure how factual it is but gives a clue to some peoples thoughts
during it time.
