This book looks at Minnesota from pre-settlement through the 1930s.  It also shows the thoughts of the author from the time he is writing it.

This book outlines some of the major changes in Minnesota from the 1800s to the 1980s with a special focus on landscape transformation in different sections.

Cronon, William. Nature’s Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1991.
Cronon here has written an Environmental History of Chicago and the areas around it.  It also in general looks at the settlement and development in America on a bigger scale.  It shows some of the ways settlers and those came after them relate to and shaped that area and were shaped by it.

Davis, James E. Frontier America 1800-1840: A Comparative Demographic Analysis of the Frontier Process. Glendale, CA: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1977.
This book looks at the demographic aspects of settlement.  It looks at who the people were who were settlers in a general sense, and how they related to the environment they found themselves in.

Holmquist, June Drenning ed. They Chose Minnesota: A Survey Of The State’s Ethnic Groups. St. Paul, MN: Minnesota Historical Society Press, 1981.
This book gives a general overview of the different ethnic groups that have been attracted to settle in Minnesota and some of the reasons they settled in the state.  It also talks about what Minnesota was like when they did settle here.  It is a sort of history through people and their ethnicity, which may have influenced where they settled and on what type of land.  This may or may not have been an element in the settlement of the Northfield area.

Larsen, Arthur J. The Settlement And Development Of Rice County, Minnesota To 1875. Minnesota: University of Minnesota, 1931.
This book talks more locally about how settlement took place in Rice County and the early Cannon River Valley area in which Northfield is located.  It goes back before settlement showing some of the factors leading up to it, which are also important in understanding the settlement itself.

Munson, Raymond.. Rice County: The Story of its Discovery and Settlement. Minneapolis, MN: Works Progress Administration, 1938.
This book also talks about the settlement of the County but is in a storybook form intended for children to learn about their locality.  It has interesting portrayals of the settlement and the relation that the first white settlers had with Native Americans in the area.  It am not sure how factual it is but gives a clue to some peoples thoughts during it time.

Here landscape in general is explored, what it mean, how it is shaped and shapes those who shape it.  This books looks at the grid, and land practices that have impacted the landscape and been shaped by the settlers who chose those areas in a general sense.

Swanberg, L.E. Ed. Then & Now: A History of Rice County, Faribault, & Communities. Faribault, MN: Modern Printers, 1976.
This book provides some more information on the county and the Northfield area, which we be needed to do an analysis that is specifically trying to look at this area.

Warren, Louis S. American Environmental History. Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishing, 2003.
This is book contains general overviews of early America and settlement.  Though most of it is before the time of Minnesota it point in direction to look at settlement and what it meant for the land it occurred on and the people who live there.
