A common theme that emerged in my conversations with farmers is the importance of locally appropriate conservation practices suited to a region’s unique soil type, topography, climate, and socioeconomic characteristics.  Another theme was the importance of farmer-to-farmer connections in the diffusion of knowledge regarding ecologically and economically sustainable farming practices.  Given the importance of these two factors in conservation farming, I wanted to share with the Northfield agricultural community the results of ecological research performed on local farms, as well as the practices and insights of farmers in the Cannon River Region who are working toward sustainability.

In order to accomplish this goal, I designed a Conservation Farming Presentation and an accompanying Conservation Farming Handout that together provide an overview of conservation farming practices, how to implement them, and the resources available to aid in implementing them.  This presentation will be used in outreach programs of the Cannon River Watershed Partnership.  It blends information about locally appropriate practices (from interviews) with the larger body of literature on conservation farming practices.  It shares the results of research on Northfield farms that demonstrates the benefits of conservation practices in terms of soil fertility and structure, water quality, energy resources, and productivity.  Finally, the presentation includes a review of government technical and financial assistance programs for conservation farming.  The handout lists technical references, references for information on government cost sharing programs, and agricultural extension education opportunities from local soil and water conservation districts.
