To assist industry in taking an active role in the improvement of the environment and their communities, the EPA has created programs that give industry a starting point with which to make progress toward lower levels of pollution.

The “Design for the Environment” program

The DfE program is organized and maintained by the EPA as a direct partnership to assist industry in decreasing environmental risks associated with production. DfE programs also include “partnership programs” for specific industries to help in the application and integration of more environmentally friendly solutions to production processes.

Partnership programs have been created for industries related to; Automotive Refinishing, Adhesives, Chemical Production, Computer Display, Garment and Textile Care, Flexographic Printing, Printing and Packaging, Laundry Services, Environmental Management Systems, Lead-free Soldering, Lithographic Printing, Wiring Board/Circuit Board Printing, and Screen Printing. These Initiatives not only provide environmentally friendly solutions to basic production processes, but also establish a framework for communication between industries involved in the initiative.

The “Green Chemistry” Movement

The EPA’s green chemistry program supports the use of “benign design” chemical processes as well as assisting the introduction of green practices into undergraduate level chemistry courses.
