The Environmental Protection Agency created these pages specifically with Great Lakes ecosystems in mind.  There is information on landscaping in the Midwest, including links to landscaping guides and existing natural landscaping projects, case studies, and programs.  Check out all the information on the resources page.

This site includes garden designs for five different types of ecosystems, plus educational information on Minnesota-native plants, native plant suppliers, exotic species, and more.  A site from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Minnesota Native Plants Society

A good source for finding contacts for native plant information around the state.  There are also various field trips and symposium events that are highlighted on this site and sponsored by this organization.

Neighborhood Wilds

Another site by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources designed to introduce the concepts of natural landscaping and discuss some of the benefits of installing a natural garden.

NPIN: Native Plants Database

A database of native plants by the Native Plant Information Network of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center that includes information on more than 2,900 plant species.  Search by region of distribution, bloom time or color, growing conditions, growth form, or taxonomy.

NWF: Backyard Wildlife Habitat

A program sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation with regional information on native plants and wildlife, as well as an online habitat planner.  There are also opportunities to certify your backyard as a wildlife habitat area.  Why certify?  Check out the benefits you'll recieve from the NWF and from local plant and animal species.

PLANTS National Database

The National Plant Data Center provides this database of native plant information.  It is not searchable by geographic region, but provides useful information for known plant species.  A site from the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes

This organization's mission is to "promote environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities."  There is especially useful information on the natural landscaping page.
