Writing about place is one of the best ways to learn about it.  Writing about the science of a place is one of the best ways to understand a place.  And understanding a place is one of the best ways to find a home.

Of course, if you don't particularly enjoy writing, you can always read other writers' (preferably science writers') writings about place.  For starters, I encourage you to seek out the works of science writer Heather Wayne in the Cannon River Watershed Partnership's Watershed Watcher.
