On a larger scale, what will consumers choose if the GM food industry actually creates a cheaper, more convenient, more nutritious, more delicious strawberry, maybe even one that can be grown without methyl bromide?” -Melanie DuPuis

If the United States decides to enforce mandatory labeling of genetically modified products, there would no doubt be a shift in the consumer market. However, as noted by David S. Conner, even with perfect information about where and how things are produced, consumers will not necessarily choose products based on how their purchases impact their world. Price, convenience, and name brands will still play a role in consumer choice (Conner, 2004).

St. Olaf College is a liberal arts school; students should have basic knowledge in regards to a wide variety of subjects. If students are concerned about what they put into their body, as my survey suggests, then they should be informed as to what a GMO is, so that when given the choice, they can make educated decisions. It is my hope that this website will provide as a useful tool to those wishing to learn more about GMOs, but also encourage viewers to do a little research of their own.
