Introduction
Outdoor recreation is the primary method of interaction with nature for many individuals throughout the world. Be it on a bike, in a canoe, or on their own two feet, Americans in particular have a pastime of getting off the beaten path and experiencing the world outside of the familiar. My past is no exception; as a child and continuing into adulthood I have spent many hours hiking, biking, and challenging myself through unfamiliar experiences.

The increasing popularity of recreation and tourism in public lands raises important questions: What are the impacts of certain recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and off-road vehicle use, on ecosystems? How can forest management professionals mitigate these impacts? What has been done in other public lands to address similar problems? And finally, what can be done in the Superior National Forest in Minnesota? The goal of my project is to examine each of these questions, and hopefully find adequate solutions for the future. ENJOY!
