This bird was chosen because it acts as a keystone species, indicative of a healthy prairie habitat. Normally the Nature Conservancy owns the land it operates, however the Refugio-Goliad Prairie is home to some of Texas' largest and oldest cattle ranching operations. To remedy this, the Conservancy has partnered with the ranchers to help restore native grasslands in this region. |
