2009

Ben Verdoorn Spring 2009 St. Olaf College; Independent Research Ben used ICP-AES to determine the concentration of various metal ions present in the two holding ponds behind Regents Hall.  Data was collected for sodium, calcium, iron, copper, lead, and chromium and served as the start for the long-term chemical profile project in the ponds.

Emily Ellingson Spring 2009 St. Olaf College; Independent Research Emily used GIS, local maps and resources to remap and evaluate the exploration path associated with the 1839 Missouri River Exploration done by J.N. Nicollet.  This is part of an effort to articulate the nature of landscape change that has occurred since the early exploration of these lands to the present day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2008

Nolan Schlicter Summer 2008 St. Olaf College; Summer Research Staff Nolan explored the lakes of Northern Minnesota to assess populations and habitats of the longeared sunfish (Lepomis magalotis) under the direction of Dr. Pat Ceas.  Funded by the MN DNR the work recorded how the behaviors of shoreline property owners impacted the populations of this sunfish species, in particular their spawning grounds.

Jordan Vitse Summer 2008 MN Dept of Agriculture; Plant Protection Division; Gypsy Moth Unit Jordan served as a gypsy moth trapper for his area of SE Minnesota –areas in  Houston, Fillmore and Winona counties.  He constructed, placed and removed over 700 traps as well as catalog the 610 moths captured.  The data are then integrated with the state wide moth management program.

Ting Ting Yang, Kate Carroll, John Vanderlinden Summer 2007 St. Olaf College; Natural Lands In addition to performing maintenance issues on the college natural lands, the group continued the long term examination of hardwood forest restoration across multiple direct seeding plots.
