Departments and Programs

Like many natural and mathematical sciences divisions at liberal arts colleges, St. Olaf College has been actively addressing the growing trend towards interdisciplinarity.  We envision:

  • A curriculum that is both rigorously grounded in disciplinary fundamentals and intentional in its opportunities for interdisciplinary inquiry.

  • Students who navigate the more disciplinary areas of the curriculum with a connectedness mindset and explore interdisciplinary fields mindful of disciplinary components.

  • A faculty that thrives within a broad sense of belonging, one that carries substantial interdisciplinary expertise, actively seeks collaboration, and finds fulfillment both within and across departmental/disciplinary contexts.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics includes majors and concentrations in:

* Biology
* Biomedical Studies
* Biomolecular Science

Recently added classes in bioinformatics, biophysical chemistry and mathematical biology illustrate the college’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning.
