ACTIVITIES REQUIREMENT
Purpose of requirement:
1. The purpose of an Activities requirement
is to encourage you to use the French you are learning in class
in real-world contexts outside the classroom. Assigned Language
Lab activities provide one avenue for such use, offering you additional
aural and speaking opportunities beyond those possible in a class
that meets (only) three hours per week; but they are not enough...
2. These additional opportunities to
use your French are not “frills” or “busy work”; they are crucial
to progress in listening and speaking. French faculty urge you to
view the panoply of activities listed below as opportunities for
students of French similar to those offered music students (participation
in music ensembles, attendance at recitals, etc.) and theatre students
(working on the production of a play).
3. To a large extent, the choice of out-of-class
aural/oral activities in which you participate is up to you; that
is, your needs, your interests, your preferred learning style, can
determine your choice of activities.
4. Formal Language Lab work (normally
detailed on the course syllabus) is supplemented by more relaxed
“real-world” opportunities to communicate in French with other speakers
of the language. Requirement Your lab grade is composed of two elements:
the completion of specific lab assignments listed on the course
syllabus, and participation in language use activities you choose
from the list given below.
The number of points of out-of-class language
use activities required varies with the course.
