Catalogue Description:

Students encounter first-hand Vienna's rich cultural heritage as revealed in museums, theaters, operas, operettas, concerts, and in the city's architectural masterpieces.  We focus on turn-of-the-century Vienna and the shift from the late 19th century Romanticism of the declining Habsburg Empire to an unprecedented Modernism in all the arts, including architecture (Otto Wagner, Loos) and music (Mahler, Schönberg), as well as psychology (Freud), science (Mach), and philosophy (Wittgenstein), but especially the art of Klimt, Kokoschka, and Schiele, as well as the cult of death and suicide in fin-de-siècle Vienna as observed in cemeteries and crypts.  Taught in English.  GE:  ALS-A, HWC, German FLAC also available.  Fee:  $4,150 (includes all transportation, hotel, tours, performances, museums, Vienna transit pass, breakfast and dinner daily).
