1. As a member of the German House, an honor house, you become a role model for all St. Olaf students, particularly for those who are studying German. How do you plan on being a positive role model for other students?

2. Living in the St. Olaf German House is a community experience. Therefore, by applying to live here, you are signifying your desire to take a more active role in integrating the German language and culture not only into the environment of the House, but also that of the German Department, and the St. Olaf community at large. Briefly describe some events that would help you reach this goal.

3. List the German courses you have taken at St. Olaf. Then describe any study abroad or travel experiences you may have had in a German-speaking country.

4. Please list any activities that you are or have been active in at St. Olaf.

5. What transferable skill(s) have you gained from being in these activities that will help you to be an effective member of the German House?

Deutsches Haus Statement of Commitment

2008-2009

• As a rule, German House residents are enrolled in at least one German course while living in the House.
• German House residents have completed the minimum language requirements (232) or have gained consent of a German faculty member to apply.

• German House residents meet at least monthly to share ideas and discuss any concerns, pertinent to the German House.
• German House residents actively participate in all House events.
• German House residents invite one monthly event for the German campus community.
• German House residents expand their language skills by conversing in the target language while in the House.
• German House residents actively work to integrate German culture into the House environment by: speaking German as much as possible, hosting events and activities, and attending the weekly Stammtisch.
• A member of the German House (usually the House President) periodically briefs the German faculty on the activities at the House.
• If for some reason a member of the German House is not able to fulfill these commitments, that student is expected to talk to a member of the German faculty to discuss further steps.

Remember, it is a privilege to live in an honor house! You have significant benefits compared to dormitory living. Please consider your efforts and work for the department as a way of giving back to St. Olaf’s German community both in and outside of the classroom. By applying, you are making a personal commitment to participate in German House events and conversation tables.
