Deutsche Filmserie im Herbstsemester 2011
Die sechs Filme des Herbstsemesters aus den Jahren 1974 bis 2011 haben den Fokus Einwanderung (nach 1945) und Auswanderung (vor 1945). Alle Vorführungen (außer dem 8. November im Viking Theater) finden im WLC Cinema Room (Tomson Hall) statt.
Dienstag, den 13. September: 19.30 – 21.30 Uhr (93 Minuten) im WLC Cinema Room
Angst essen Seele auf („Fear Eat Up Soul,“ Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1974) Depicting the challenges of a relationship between a young Moroccan guest worker and an older widowed German cleaning woman in the 1950s, this film won two awards at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and the German Film Award for Brigitte Mira.
Dienstag, den 27. September: 19.00 – 21.30 Uhr (100 Minuten) im WLC Cinema Room
Kurz und schmerzlos in German without subtitles. This is a fast-paced "Krimi," a "Kriminalfilm" from 1998 by the highly acclaimed German-Turkish director Fatih Ak?n following the lives of three friends, all immigrants to Germany, a Greek, a Serb, and a Turk, as they move in and out of the criminal underworld of Hamburg-Altona.

Nirgendwo in Afrika („Nowhere in Africa,“ Caroline Link, 2001) Based on the novel by Stefanie Zweig, the film depicts the lives of a German Jewish family living in exile in Kenya and Nairobi from 1938 until the early postwar years. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Picture, five German Film Awards 2002, Bavarian Film Award, 2002 and 2003.

Rosenstraße (Margarethe von Trotta, 2003) From New York in the year 2000, a daughter pieces together the story of her Aryan mother and imprisoned Jewish father in Berlin of 1943 as the film moves back and forth between the two worlds. Golden Globe 2004, Bavarian Film Award (cinematography), Donatello award (Best European Film), four awards at Venice Film Festival, Volpi Cup, Golden Lion.

Auf der anderen Seite („The Edge of Heaven,“ Fatih Akin, 2007) This film interweaves the stories of two generations, transformed as they travel back and forth between Germany and Turkey, oblivious to those whose lives they touch. Best Screenplay at Cannes 2007, five Antalya Golden Orange Film awards, European Parliament LUX prize, Lino Brocka Award, Critics Award at the European Cinema Festival in Seville, European Film Award for best screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Hanna Schygulla) from National Society of Film Critics.

Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland (Yasemin Samdereli, 2011). A rare comedy about three generations of a Turkish family struggling with questions of identity before returning to their old homeland after over half a century in Germany.
