The university at Paderborn is known officially as the Universität-Gesamthochschule Paderborn. Founded in 1972, its central structure stands at the edge of the city of Paderborn, on a line from Köln to Berlin. Natural sciences, economics, social sciences, and humanities are especially well represented on this main campus while the university also has two departments of theology, one Protestant and one Catholic. Music courses are available at the university and can be taken at the Musikhochschule in nearby Detmold, which is affiliated with the university. Subcampuses of the university, offering courses in areas such as engineering, architecture, and agriculture, are located in Höxter, Meschede, and Soest.
With more than 10,000 students, the university delivers the latest
in facilities but rests on an established tradition extending by
way of its philosophical and theological roots to the Jesuit University
that was established there in 1614. Due to its recent date of reestablishment,
the contemporary university is blessed with excellent facilities
for sports, audio-video media equipment, and especially a comprehensive
library of a million books and 4,000 journals. All books are arranged
in open stacks. For the sophisticated researcher there is an active
interlibrary loan (Fernleihe); a comprehensive computer system with
Basic, Fortran and Cobol languages serves the university campus.
In addition to its official exchange with St. Olaf, Paderborn enjoys
international study relationships with Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham
(England), Le Mans (France), Choquing (People's Republic of China)
and others.
