History Major Plan
1) The Department of History recommends that students base their majors on a broad knowledge in History. What courses might you use for this foundational knowledge?
2) The Department requires that History majors be acquainted with the traditions of different civilizations. Which courses do you plan to take to fulfill the area requirement (1 course each in U.S., European, and Non-Western History)?
3) Often students focus in a particular world area. Do you plan to focus in one of these areas? If so, how do you plan to sequence your courses so that you develop skills and knowledge?
4) The Department requires that a History major should represent some chronological range. Which two courses do you plan to take in the Pre-Modern period (before 1800 in Europe, and before 1900 in the United States and the rest of the world). ). [For a list of courses that count, see the matrix at http://www.stolaf.edu/depts/history/major/Require_After_Aug04.htm ].
5) The Department thinks that foreign study can enhance a History major. Do you plan to go overseas on one of St. OlafŐs international programs? Do you plan to take History courses as a preparation for that experience? How will your overseas courses complement or contribute to your major? In the same way, foreign languages can enhance a History major. Do you plan to take classes with a Foreign Language Across the Curriculum (FLAC) component?
6) The Department thinks (and requires) that a major should include continuous skill development and in-depth study of several different topics. Which level II History major seminar (201, 210, 240, or 270) and which 3 Level III courses (or independent research projects) do you plan to take?
7) The Department regularly prepares some students for further study in History. Do you plan to go to graduate school in History or a related discipline? Do you plan to undertake a substantial research project as a way of showing your skills? Do you plan to do this as part of a class, as part of the Senior Thesis Seminar, or as an independent project?
8) The Department offers the Senior Thesis Seminar as a capstone experience, and as a preparation for Departmental Distinction. If you take the Thesis Seminar, what topics do you think you might focus on?
9) Finally, combining all your responses to the previous questions, which 9 (or more) courses do you plan to submit for your History major?
