X は Y です
    "It is 12:30." "I am a student." These are sentences that can be translated into Japanese using an appropriate noun and the word desu.

〜です。　　　　It is ...

　　　　　　　　　　じゅうにじはんです。　　　(It) is half past twelve 　　　　　　　　　　　　Juunniji han desu. 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

がくせいです。　　　　　 (I) am a student.
Gakusei desu.                                              

Similarly, one can use the pattern X wa Y desu to identify a person or a thing X as item Y.
                                           

X は Y　です。 　　　X is Y. As for X, it is Y.

わたし　は　スー・キム　です。              I am Sue Kim.
 Watashi wa Suu Kimu desu.
