Adjective/Noun + の

When a noun follows an adjective , and when it is clear what you are referring to, yuou can replace the noun with the pronoun の, "one." の is used to avoid repetition.

わたしはくろいセーターをもっています。あかいのもっています。　（の＝セーター）

やすいじしょを買いに行きました。でもいいのがありませんでした。　（の＝じしょ）

In a similar way, a noun following another noun can be reduced: noun のnoun can be reduced simply to noun の.

これはスーさんのかばんですか。　　いいえ、それはメアリーさんのです。

Is that Sue's bag? No, that's Mary's.

アメリカのアイスクリームのほうが日本のよりおいしいです。

American ice cream is more delicious than Japanese one.
