WHAT ARE MEDIA STUDIES ALUMNI DOING?
Lauren Fischer ’08
I am currently a Consumer Group Intern at Weber Shandwick, a public relations (PR) firm, and was previously a Communications Coordinator at NEED magazine. I chose to pursue a career in the media because it’s a medium that I believe in. I have seen the power of good journalism and media coverage and I’m passionate about being a part of this movement.
In my current job, I am a media expert! Meaning, I monitor the incoming media every day for a client of ours. I create comprehensive reports that detail how the media is effecting the brand conversation surrounding our client’s image. This has been fascinating work to be a part of – it’s amazing to see the full effects of the media.
The aspect I most appreciated throughout my Media Studies concentration was how it shifted my focus. My Media Studies classes taught me to look at the media as an observer - to look for trends, themes and influencers. I learned how to think strategically about my interaction with the media and how the media shapes our nation’s opinions. I gained a new perspective that I still carry with me today.
