mathematics and statistics.
By the Numbers
- St. Olaf’s mathematics program is nationally recognized for innovative and
effective teaching, for scholarship and for service to the profession.
- 8% to 10% of St. Olaf graduates are mathematics majors, compared with the
national average of about 2–3% for liberal arts colleges.
- The National Science Foundation’s Survey of Earned Doctorates shows that
St. Olaf ranked first among four-year colleges in the number of mathematical
sciences Ph.D.s produced between 1990 and 1995, and sixth overall, behind only
Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton, University of Chicago and Caltech.
- 75% of all St. Olaf students take a mathematics course at the calculus level or above.
- More than 50 students are employed each year as math tutors, clinic workers and paper graders.
- More than half of St. Olaf mathematics majors are women.
- 30% of St. Olaf mathematics majors attend graduate school.
