Facilities

The hub of musical activity at St. Olaf is the Christiansen Hall of Music (see pictures on the virtual tour). Named after the father and son who brought the St. Olaf music program to national prominence, Christiansen Hall of Music houses Urness Recital Hall, the Margaret Skoglund Reception Room, the Halvorson Music Library, music organizations offices, music department offices, three rehearsal rooms, classrooms, practice rooms, faculty studios, the electronic music studio, and the piano technician's workshop. Additional practice facilities are located on the fourth and fifth floors of the Old Music Hall (connected to the Science Center).

The Hector Skifter Radio Building holds the Tormodsgaard-Bakken Recital Hall (Studio A) which contains a Dobson three-manual tracker organ. Boe Memorial Chapel, soon to be undergoing a major renovation, is a frequent site of concerts and contains a Schlicker organ, renovated in 1990 by Holtkamp.

The annual Christmas Festival and many other concerts take place in Skoglund Auditorium. Opera and musical theater productions are staged in Urness Recital Hall or the Speech-Theater Building, with both a traditional proscenium stage and a flexible studio theater. The electronic music studio is equipped with Macintosh and Windows computers, synthesizers, and appropriate software. The keyboard and ear training lab includes practice keyboards and Power Macs with ear training and notation programs.
