Nyheter / Essay

1. Nyheter

  • Find and print a news article either from the Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten, or from the Norwegian public television, NRK. The article must be substantial, at least 3 paragraphs / 3/4 - 1 page, and it may be about a part of Norwegian culture that interests you or about the terrorist attack on New York City.
  • Read the article twice without using a dictionary. Make sure you look at the title, the sub-headings, the pictures, and any other visual clues in the article. Make notes in the margin in English about the parts you understand.
  • On a separate piece of paper, make a list of five words that you think you need to know in order to understand the main ideas in the article. Look up those words and write down their definitions. Fill in any more details you understand by making more notes in the margin in English.
  • On the separate piece of paper, write a 3-5 sentence summary of the article in Norwegian beginning with "Denne artikkelen handler om _____. (This article is about _______.)"

2. Dialog

  • Write a 3/4-1 page dialog in which you and your roommate in Norway discuss how your days went and what you are going to watch on TV during the evening.
  • Look at the dialog on pg. 81 in the textbook and use that as a model.
  • Use the online Norwegian TV Guide so that you are discussing current programs on Norwegian TV in your dialog. Print out that section of the TV Guide and attach it to your dialog.
  • After you have written your first draft, go back and look at the following things:
    • Check your spelling and use of the Norwegian characters.
    • Check to see that you have used present tense and the infinitive correctly.
    • Check the word order, especially in your questions
    • Check the times you have used in your dialog.
    • Make sure that you started and ended your dialog appropriately.
  • Print your dialog and bring it to class on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

3. Diskette

  • Find the computer diskette in the back of your På vei workbook. Take the diskette to a Windows computer. You can install the program or you can run the program directly from the diskette.
  • Do the exercises on the diskette for Ch. 8.
