Geitungen - a Norwegian trio - will play at The Contented Cow, 302B Division St S in Northfield 8-10pm. The group presents tunes that were once popular with party-goers in the hinterland of Rogaland province, tunes that were dance floor favorites – the hits of yesteryear. Their second album, Bra Kast. won a Norwegian Folk Music Award in 2005 for best album in the open/experimental class. Their third album, Langt Ute is nominated for the same award in 2011. The group plays the tunes in the rhythmic fashion handed down through the years. The three musicians’ fiddles, diatonic accordion, melodeon, mandolin, hardanger fiddle, mandola and guitars combine to color the soundboard. The expression is straightforward and the music ranges from cosy, warm mazurkas to hotheaded hopsars and plaintive waltzes, sometimes with elements of more contemporary popular music styles in the arrangements. With their capricious and compelling playing, Geitungen takes you back, far out to the poorly lit dance floors of the more festive parts of rural southwestern Norway. Geitungen has released three albums: Langt Ute (2010), Bra Kast (2005) and Vaniljesaus (2001). They are playing in Northfield at the end of a tour that has taken them to Alberta and British Columbia in Canada and gigs in Washington State, North Dakota and Minnesota. They received standing ovations from audiences at the 2011 Norsk Høstfest in Minot last week.
Geitungen is: VIDAR SKREDE on hardanger fiddle, fiddle and guitars. He is a freelance musician and a member of numerous Nordic bands like The Great Norwegian Guitar Quartet, NOMAS, The Secret Carpet Club, Fant&Fente, Aamos, Stimenn, and Vidar Skrede Dynamo Band. He has a master’s degree in Nordic folk music from the Royal School of Music in Stockholm.
CHRISTER ROSSEBØ plays fiddle, mandolin, mandola and guitar. A freelance musician, known from bands like Bergen Mandolin Band, Earlybird Stringband, Fant&Fente and Filibuster, Christer is a candidate in folk music performance at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
HÅVARD IMS plays melodeons / accordions. He is a former Norwegian champion on the instrument. The three guys met as teenagers and have been playing together since 1997. They have appeared on TV and radio in several countries, and presented a live concert at Studio 19 on NRK (The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) radio.
Geitungen is at the forefront of Norwegian folk musicians inspired by both modern times and "the old days". They represent a living expression of folk music that put new life into old traditions. * No Cover - Tips for the Band Strongly Encouraged - CDs Available *

(In the beautiful fishing village of Nyksund in Vesterålen in Nordland, the Americans are assigned by actor Stig Henrik Hoff to collect as many North-Norwegian swear words as possible. Deretter venter blant annet loppemarkedssalg, overnatting i skolegymsal og en av de tøffeste konkurransene så langt - å ta hånd om norske barn på SFO. (Social democracy and "dugnad" is the theme of the week for the eight surviving Norwegian Americans. The first thing they do is meet the Prime Minister himself!
