Informal conversation

  • Norwegian Conversation Table (4 pts)
    The Norwegian Assistants, Bjørn Sjue and Kristen Hammervold, and current Norwegian House residents, are always present as well as American students studying Norwegian. The students will bring along articles about current events in Norway, and the discussion will range from what's happening in Norway to recent events at St. Olaf and in the lives of the students.

  • Interview Sessions with Students from Norway (4 pts)
    Pairs of students will interview the Norwegian students on campus about life in modern Norway.

    Topics: Identity, Education, Work, Food, Seasons, Travel, Multiculturalism, etc.

Informal presentations and activities

  • Presentations on Norwegian Culture (4 pts)
    There will be short presentations in Norwegian on a variety of topics about modern Norway given by students from Norway,the residents in the Norwegian House, Norwegian majors, or Nordic Studies concentrators. Afterward, there will be time for questions and discussion in both Norwegian and English.

    September: Norwegian language (bokmål og nynorsk), dialects, and language history
    October: Norway as a multicultural society
    November: Norwegian geography: Hometowns and favorite places

  • Language Learning via Activities (4 pts)
    You will have a chance to speak Norwegian as you take part in an activity, such as singing, skiing, knitting, rosemaling, cooking, making Christmas ornaments, playing soccer or other sports, etc.

    September: Norwegian Department Grillfest / Ice Cream Social
    (meeting professors, Norwegian students, and Norwegian majors;
    introduction to this year's activities -- singing with Margaret, knitting, skiing, soccer, and cooking

  • Film Series (8 pts)
    There will be a bi-monthly Norwegian Film Series in Old Main 15.

  • Lectures, Concerts, and Art Exhibitions (4 pts)
    Each semester, there will be several designated lectures, concerts, and art exhibitions by guests from Norway.

Holiday Events

  • Norwegian Christmas Chapel Service (4 pts, required for all students):
    At the end of fall semester, the Norwegian Department sponsors a Norwegian Christmas Chapel Service with Norwegian Christmas carols, the Christmas Gospel read in Norwegian, and short descriptions of Christmas in Norway by Norwegian students. If you are interested in singing, you make join the Norwegian Choir, which usually performs two pieces during the service.

  • 17th of May Breakfast (4 pts, required for all students):
    At the end of spring semester, the Norwegian Department sponsors a 17th of May Breakfast to celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day. The breakfast features Norwegian meats and fish, bread and cheeses, and there is entertainment by students from Norway.
