Norwegian
vowels on your computer
Below are several ways to produce the Norwegian vowels on your computer. Experiment with the different methods and find one that is best for you.
MAC
users
A. Option key + other characters
æ:
option key + apostrophe
Æ: option key + shift + apostrophe
ø:
option key + o
Ø: option key + shift + o
å:
option key + a
Å: option key + shift + a
B. Using the Norwegian keyboard
(OSX)
1. Click on system
preferences
2. Click on international
3. Select the keyboard menu tab
4. Select Norwegian
5. There should be an American flag on your menu bar. If you click on
it, you should be able to see a Norwegian flag. If you select the Norwegian
flag, your keyboard will use the same keys that a PC uses for Norwegian
vowels (see illustrations, below), which are:
æ = ‘
ø = ;
å = [
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PC Users:
A. Alt key + number codes
Å = Alt+0197
å = Alt+0229
Æ = Alt+0198
æ = Alt+0230
Ø = Alt+0216
ø = Alt+0248
B. Using the Norwegian keyboard
For PCs, simply select NO-norwegian
bokmål--in the pop-up menu in the task bar (lower right-hand
corner of your screen). Once you have selected Norwegian,
the letters are as in the illustrations below. If they still do not appear, you may also need to select the Norwegian keyboard layout. That icon is also in the taskbar, but may be hidden. If this is the case, you will need to right-click on the taskbar to unlock it, then drag it open so that you can see the keyboard layout icon. Choose the Norwegian keyboard.
Since several other keys (mostly punctuation) are in different
locations on the Norwegian keyboard, some people prefer to toggle back and forth
between English and Norwegian keyboards.
C. Using the international keyboard
It is also possible to access the Norwegian vowels on the international keyboard, which you select in the taskbar (on public computers you need to first select a language that has the international keyboard activated, such as German). They are created like this:
æ -- right alt z
ø -- right alt l
å -- right alt w
Upper case simply uses the shift key in addition.
D. Adding the Norwegian keyboard to your personal
computer
Windows
XP (Home and Professional) (Windows 2000 and Vista are similar):
1. Click on the Start Menu, and select Control Panel.
2. In Control Panels, select Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
3. Next, click on Regional and Language Options.
4. In the Regional and Language Options control panel, click on the
Languages tab.
5. Under the Text services and input languages heading, click the Details
button. The Text Services and Input Languages control panel will pop
up.
6. Under the Installed services heading, click the Add Button. For the
Input language, select Norwegian (Bokmal), and for the keyboard layout,
select Norwegian.
7.
After you have selected Norwegian input language and keyboard layout, check the box in front of "Show Language bar."
8. You can then edit your preferences in the Language Bar.
9. Click OK and close all of the control panels.
You should now be able to switch between the Norwegian and United States
keyboard layouts by choosing the NO icon in the taskbar or pressing the keys you have selected to allow you to toggle back and forth.
