Augustana College, Rock Island, IL

Gustavus Adolphus College, St.Peter, MN
Swedish language has been taught at Gustavus since the college was founded in 1862. Today, in addition to having multi-level instruction in Swedish,the Department of Scandinavian Studies offers courses in English on Nordic literature, Nordic cinema, Nordic history - including emigration/immigration history - and interdisciplinary courses on Nordic culture - including Sami studies. Gustavus also has exchange programs with Swedish institutions and assists students in finding study programs in all the other Nordic countries as well. An annual Scandinavian artist-in-residence program brings internationally recognized Nordic writers and artists to campus.

Minnesota State University at Mankato, Mankato, MN
The Scandinavian program at Mankato is designed to answer the needs of students who want to become more familiar with their heritage. Founded by the Evangelical Covenant Church, North Park University's mission is "to prepare students for lives of significance and service". The Department of Germanic Studies began offering courses in Norwegian, Swedish, and Scandinavian Studies in 1894, one year after the University of Chicago was founded. University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois offers Swedish language instruction from beginning to advanced levels and courses in Viking mythology, the Icelandic sagas, Swedish film, and various topics in Scandinavian literature taught in English. Old Norse is offered at the graduate level. Undergraduates choosing the Scandinavian option as their major spend a year studying abroad.
