The Center for Technology Across Languages and Cultures was established during the academic year 2000-2001, as the result of a grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The grant funding was disbursed during three years to cover the period from September 1, 2000 until August 31, 2003.

Original Grant Proposal

  • Mission: The mission of the Center of Technology Across Languages and Cultures is to strengthen the links between pedagogy, faculty skills with new technologies, and student learning.
  • The Center will accomplishe this mission by creating a .5 position of faculty Director of Technology Across Languages and Cultures. The Director will coordinate the activities of the Center, including:
  • Data collection related to equipment available to language faculty, faculty expertise and interest in applying technology to language/culture teaching on-and-off campus resources for integration of technology to language/culture teaching and learning.
  • Facilitation of equipment purchasing through the IIT for equipment to be available to all language faculty (including classroom technologies and technology for faculty work, but excluding the language lab).
  • Regular opportunities for conversations about goals and methods of instruction of languages and cultures and about program planning across levels and across languages.
  • Establishment of a network of peer support for technology integration into language/culture study.
  • Faculty visits to technology-rich programs at other institutions.
  • Visits of outside speakers and consultants to aid in the work of the Center.
  • Faculty technology workshops during the academic year.
  • Intensive summer workshops for faculty and faculty-student teams.
  • Year-long work-study assignments for students to facilitate collaborative projects between faculty and students.
  • Release-time grants for language faculty to pursue projects related to integration of technology into language/culture pedagogy.
  • To support many of the above initiatives, the creation of a web site.
